Benito Laren

Benito Laren (1962, San Nicolás, Argentina) was one of the key figures of the 1990s “Art Light” movement in Argentina and was part of the legendary Centro Cultural Rojas in Buenos Aires. He was trained as chemist and always pushed by strong artistic inclinations; he confesses that the sole thing that interested him about science was color. His work is irreverent and showy, always making use of decorative and playful elements that respond to the 1980s colder, and politically charged aesthetics of Argentinean art. Through time Laren has become a remarkable figure within the Argentinean art circuit. By utilizing an array of materials and media to create colorful works -- that for the most time reference himself -- Laren’s talent takes form when he smartly combines humor, invention, and eccentricity, all framed by an irreverent tone towards the figure of the artist and of art itself.
